High School Course Descriptions

Grades 9-12

COMP SCI & TECH CONCEPTS
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This one-semester course provides students with skills in computer education and technology. Areas of emphasis include computer science, computational thinking, productivity applications, and digital citizenship. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. This course fulfills the one-half computer credit or one half of one of the elective credits required for high school graduation.

 

DUAL ENROLLMENT
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

An educational option which provides the student the opportunity to earn college credits through Great Basin College.  Students may enroll in courses not offered at Explore Knowledge Academy.  College tuition, books and transportation may be the responsibility of the student.  Prerequisite:  Counselor AND Administration approval

 

JUNIOR STUDIES
Grade level:  11

This one year course is designed to aide students in the understanding and explanation of the planning skills involved with future training or education beyond high school.  The concerns of a new environment, independent work study habits and positive test taking experiences are some of the survival skills that will be presented.  Discussion of resumes, PSAT, SAT, and ACT testing, job applications, budgeting, finance, community service, career research for vocational or college opportunities, scholarships and financial aid will be a large part of the class.  Prerequisite: Grade 11

STUDENT AIDE
Grade level: 11,12

This one year course is designed to allow students to assist teachers in classroom management.  Under direct supervisor, students will gain experience in clerical duties, laboratory assistance, working with faculty members and following directions.  Students are assigned to supervising teachers by a formal application process.  Students are limited to one credit.  Prerequisites: Teacher approval, 2.5 or better GPA.

 

STUDENT TUTOR
Grade level:  11,12

This one year course is designed to give students interested in teaching or social services professions an opportunity to help academically weak students.  Student tutors may be assigned to core curriculum areas to assist other students.  Prerequisites: 2.0 or better GPA

 

SENIOR SEMINAR
Grade level:  12

This one year course is designed to reinforce and expand learning related to school to career transition.  Classroom instruction will focus on career preparation activities in a cross disciplinary design.  The classroom will be the organized hub for all student career development related to institutes.  Students will participate in discussions, mock interviews and job shadowing experiences with representatives from the business community.  Senior Seminar is designed to be followed by a semester of internship related to the selected institute and could include youth apprenticeships or community service activities.  Students will be required to submit a portfolio at the completion of the course.  Prerequisite: Grade 12

 

WORK EXPERIENCE
Grade level:  11,12

This is one semester course provides on the job experience to prepare students for entry level positions in their field of interest and/or interest them in the world of work.  Students must receive pay documented with pay stubs and will receive high school credit for successful completion of A MINIMUM OF 270 HOURS OF WORK PER SEMESTER.  To receive credit, students must have pay stubs on file and also pass their other classes.  This course may be repeated for up to a total of two elective credits.  Prerequisites:  Qualify for a work permit.

 

STUDY SKILLS
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This one-year course teaches students the process of organizing their thinking to acquire knowledge of new concepts and skills, and retain information that aids in their ability to study and successfully participate in all areas of academic studies. Strategies may include the use of mnemonics, effective reading strategies, concentration techniques, effective note taking, and time management and motivation techniques. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. Students with Individualized Educational Program (IEP) have diverse needs and course accommodations and/or modifications may be required based upon IEP identified need. This repeatable course fulfills the one elective credit required for high school graduation.

 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

SPANISH I

Grade level: 8, 9,10,11,12

This one year course is designed to acquaint students with the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish at an introductory level.  The focus is communication incorporating understanding of Hispanic cultures, connecting with other disciplines, comparing native language to Spanish, and participating in multicultural communities.  The course provides practice in correct usage of basic vocabulary and language structures to enable students to function effectively within realistic settings. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Eighth grade English

SPANISH II HONORS
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This one-year course is designed for students who have successfully completed Spanish I or who demonstrate a proficiency level of novice-high as identified in the foreign language proficiency guidelines established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Students continue to refine proficiency in the target language with the end-of-course goal of demonstrating proficiency at the intermediate-low level. This course is designated as honors level by the accelerated instructional pacing and depth of content. The focus is communication in the target language incorporating understanding of the target cultures, connecting with other disciplines, comparing native language to the target language, and participating in multicultural communities. The course provides practice in correct use of basic vocabulary and language structures to enable students to function effectively within realistic settings. ACTFL recommends that at least 90% of the instructional time in class be conducted in the target language. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to our society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation.

WORLD HISTORY

This course is a study of the development of mankind.  It traces the evolution of political, social, cultural, religious, technological and economic institutions from prehistoric to modern times.  The great ideas and actions of mankind which have shaped the modern world are explored.  Prerequisite:  None

 

WORLD HISTORY HONORS
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course is the study of the evolution of political, social, cultural, religious, technological and economic institutions.  Students analyze and interpret, research selected topics and develop skills in organized and logical thinking and writing.  Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation

U.S. HISTORY
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This course is a study of United States history from colonial times to the present.  It emphasizes American economic, political, social, cultural, religious, technological and military endeavors.  The achievements of men and women from all ethnic and racial backgrounds are also studied.  Prerequisite: None

 

U.S. HISTORY HONORS
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course does an in-depth study of our nation’s history from the colonial period to the present.  Students research topics and analyze and interpret readings.  Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation

 

U.S. GOVERNMENT/ECONOMICS
Grade level:  11, 12

This course is a study of the federal, state and local governments.  Emphasis is placed on understanding the basic principles of the Constitution, civil rights, politics and federalism.  A major objective of this course is to help students develop an awareness of a citizen’s rights and responsibilities.  Prerequisite:  None

 

U.S. GOVERNMENT/ECONOMICS HONORS
Grade level:  11, 12

Students gain a critical perspective on U.S. government and politics through the study of federal, state and local governments.  Current events, various institutions, groups and ideas of the American political scene will be stressed.  Emphasis is on the theories and concepts of American government.  Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation

 

 

SOCIAL STUDIES ELECTIVES

 

ARTS/HUMANITIES
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This one semester course will expose students to the disciplines which compose the humanities: the arts, philosophy, literature, political institutions, and religion.  Students will study examples of these cultural roots of civilization through an interdisciplinary approach.  A design crafts unit will provide experience in two and three dimensional designs as they apply to crafts.  Prerequisite:  None

 

PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This one year course is to train student leaders in the various aspects of leadership.  Time will be used in and out of class for performance of tasks associated with their leadership responsibilities.   Prerequisites:  Teacher recommendation

 

PSYCHOLOGY
Grade level: 10,11,12

A general introduction to the study of psychology.  Topics include psychology theory and practice, data analysis and interpretation, perception, learning and human development.  Writing will include a research paper (5-6 typed pages), essays and journals.  Also, an oral presentation will be required.  Prerequisite: Strong study skills and teacher recommendation

 

SOCIOLOGY
Grade level:  10,11,12

This one year course is the study of people, why they do what they do and how this impacts other people.   Writing will include essays, research and the interpretation of data.  Reading will be assigned from textbook and outside research material.  Prerequisites: Good study skills.

This course provides students with necessary skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  This includes learning to write complete sentences, paragraphs, compositions, friendly letters and business letters.  This course also includes training in vocational and life skills.  Prerequisite:  IEP

 

ENGLISH 9

This one year course will emphasize the study of language, literature and composition.  The skills of critical thinking, reading, listening, writing and speaking will be developed.  A variety of literature selections will be used for the development of reading strategies, literary appreciation and interpretation.  Literature selections will also serve models to develop writing skills.  Prerequisite:  None

 

ENGLISH 9 HONORS

ENGLISH 10 HONORS

This one year course is a continuation of English I emphasizing the study of language, literature and composition.  The skills of critical thinking, reading, listening, writing and speaking will be developed.  A variety of literature selections will be used for the improvement of reading strategies, literacy interpretation and interpretation.  Literature selections will also serve as models to develop writing skills.  Prerequisite:  “B” or better in English 9 AND Teacher recommendation

ENGLISH 3

This course provides students with necessary skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  This includes learning to write complete sentences, paragraphs, compositions, friendly letters and business letters.  This course also includes training in vocational and life skills.  Prerequisite:  IEP

 

ENGLISH 11
Grade level:  11,12

This course develops reading, writing, speaking, listening and research skills while enhancing critical thinking.  Various literary genres will be studied and used as models and springboards for project composition.  Student writing is assessed using rubrics and standards of the NHSPE in Writing.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of English 10 or teacher approval.

 

ENGLISH 11 HONORS
Grade level:  11,12

This one-year course (Composition and Themes in American Text) provides instruction in the English Language Arts strands identified by the Common Core State Standards as reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. This course is designated as honors level by the accelerated pacing and depth of content. This course requires expository, analytical, and argumentative writing assignments that are based on readings representing a wide variety of prose styles and genres. The course is structured around multicultural themes and perspectives found in literary, non-fiction, and expository texts by American authors to encourage students to think conceptually about the American past, present, and future as well as about the ethnic and cultural diversity of the American experience. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology and digital media are integral parts of this course. This course fulfills one of the English credits required for high school graduation.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of English 10 or teacher approval.

 

ENGLISH 4

This one year course will emphasize further development of writing skills.  Compositions and project writing will be assessed using rubrics and standards of the Nevada Proficiency Exam in Writing.  Skills in critical thinking, reading, listening and speaking will continue to be emphasized.  Various literacy genres will be studied and used as a basis for composition.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 11 or Teacher recommendation.

ENGLISH 12 HONORS
Grade level:  12

This one-year course (Post-Secondary Composition and Universal Themes in Text) provides instruction in the English Language Arts strands identified by the Common Core State Standards as reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. This course is designated as honors level by the accelerated instructional pacing and depth of content. The writing focus in this course includes analysis, synthesis, and argumentation as they relate to post-secondary education and/or careers. Instruction focuses on refining the skills required for post-secondary success. A framework structured around universal themes that connect people across cultures and time anchors texts to real-life reading, writing, and speaking and listening opportunities likely to be experienced beyond high school. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology and digital media are integral parts of this course. This course fulfills one of the English credits required for high school graduation. Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 11 or Teacher recommendation.

This one-year course develops and improves both formal and informal writing skills with emphasis placed upon self-expression, creativity, and clear communication. The appropriate use of technology and digital media are integral parts of this course. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation.

 

MATHEMATICS

 

ALGEBRA I
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This one-year course provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills for further studies in mathematics. It is intended to increase mathematical fluency in problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication in the study of number, algebra, functions, and statistics. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills the Algebra I requirement and one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Pre-Algebra or Teacher recommendation

ALGEBRA II
Grade level:  10,11,12

This course will include the field properties as a basis for better understanding of the real number system.  The study of functions will include the following types: polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, absolute value, composite and inverse.  Field properties will be used to find solutions to open structures.   Systems of open sentences of the first and second degree will be studied and the introduction of matrices, complex number series and sequences.   It is recommended that each student purchase a graphing calculator.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry. This course will be retired in 2022.

 

ALGEBRA II HONORS
Grade level:  10,11,12

This course moves at a very accelerated pace and only motivated students planning to take other high level mathematics courses.  See above for Algebra II description.  Prerequisite:  “B” or better in Algebra I Honors and Geometry Honors. This course will be retired 2022.

 

ADV. ALGEBRA W/FINANCIAL APPS
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This one-year mathematical modeling course is algebra-based, applications-oriented, and technology dependent. This course is equivalent to Algebra II. The course addresses college preparatory mathematics topics from Algebra 2, Statistics, and Probability under eight financial umbrellas: Discretionary Expenses, Banking, Investing, Credit, Employment and Income Taxes, Automobile Ownership, Independent Living, and Retirement Planning and Household Budgeting. The course allows students to experience the interrelatedness of mathematical topics, find patterns, make conjectures, and extrapolate from known situations to unknown situations. When appropriate, the mathematics topics contained in this course are introduced, developed, and applied in the financial settings covered. Students will use a variety of problem-solving skills and strategies in real-world contexts, and to question outcomes using mathematical analysis and data to support their findings. The course offers students multiple opportunities to use, construct, question, model and interpret financial situations through symbolic algebraic representations, graphical representations, geometric representations, and verbal representations. It provides students a motivating, young-adult centered financial context for understanding and applying the mathematics of advanced algebra. This course fulfills one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

 

GEOMETRY
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course is a logical development of the deductive system of reasoning with point sets in a plane.  Emphasis is on the development of logic and algebraic applications to geometry.  Coordinate and transformation approaches are introduced.  Real-world applications and computer-based explorations of 2-D and 3-D figures are explored.  Formal proofs are introduced and deductive arguments expressed orally and in written paragraph form are developed.  A ruler, protractor and compass are recommended.  Prerequisite:  “C” or better in Algebra I

 

GEOMETRY HONORS
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course is for students taking advanced courses in mathematics.  It presents plane geometry as a sustained system of deductive reasoning and extension to related concepts of solid geometry with emphasis placed on basic facts about lines, planes, solids and spherical figures.  Introduction of coordinate geometry, space geometry and area theory is provided.  It stresses deductive reasoning through formal proofs and other mechanisms.  A ruler, protractor, scientific calculator and compass are recommended.  Prerequisite:  “B” or better in Algebra I Honors or teacher recommendation.

 

FUNDAMENTAL MATH CONCEPTS
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This one-year, supplemental course in mathematics is designed for students who need additional instruction and support to master necessary mathematical concepts. This course provides additional instruction in conjunction with the student’s course of study. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation and may be repeated. This course does not fulfill one of the mathematics credits required for graduation, nor does it meet the core requirements for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

 

 

MATH 1
Grade level:  11,12

This one year course is designed for 11th and 12th graders needing further assistance in preparing for the Nevada High School Proficiency Examination in Mathematics.  This course builds on concepts of algebra, geometry and data analysis while solidifying and extending mathematical concepts, problem solving and procedures.  Areas of study will include numbers, number sense and computation; patterns, functions and algebra; measurement; spatial relationships and geometry; and data analysis.  The use of appropriate technology and hands on activities are essential to the learning environment.  Prerequisite:  Non proficient juniors and seniors

 

MATH PERSONAL FINANCE
Grade level:  11,12

This one year course is the study of personal finance for senior level students.  Students will develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics of finance to include: money management, risk management and financial planning related to consumer and family studies, career and technical education and personal finance.  The emphasis will be on refining problem-solving skills using project-based learning activities and academic integration within the context of financial applications.  The use of technology, including calculators and computer, is an integral part of this course.  THIS COURSE WILL BE RETIRED IN 2022.

 

PRE-ALGEBRA
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This one-year course designed for freshman-level students provides the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete algebra and geometry coursework. It is intended to increase mathematical fluency in problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication in the study of number, algebra, functions, geometry, and statistics. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. While this course fulfills one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation, it does not meet the core requirements for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) core requirements for university admission.

PRECALCULUS AB HONORS                    Grade level:  10,11,12

This rigorous one-year course is designed for the motivated student with a strong background in advanced algebra and will prepare the student for AP Calculus AB. In addition to reviewing topics from trigonometry, this course includes problem-solving techniques using analytic geometry, vectors, matrices, relations and functions and their graphs, probability and statistics, and the introductory concepts of calculus. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to our society. The use of technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

 

PRINCIPLES OF ALGEBRA
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course will provide students with necessary skills in mathematical principles necessary in training for vocational and life skills.  Prerequisite:  IEP

 

 

PRINCIPLES OF GEOMETRY
Grade level: 9,10,11,12

This one-year course provides students with a rigorous study of Euclidean geometry including. It incorporates problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication in the study of transformational geometry, trigonometry, measurement, and probability. Students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) have diverse needs and course accommodations and/or modifications may be required based upon IEP identified need. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of mathematical tools and technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. SCIENCE

 

BIOLOGY I
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course deals with relationships among living organisms and their environment.  It covers levels of organization of living organisms namely molecular, cellular and ecological.  Also, emphasis on scientific skills of experimentation, measurement and reporting included.  Prerequisite: None

 

BIOLOGY I HONORS
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This course is strongly recommended for those entering the Honors Program.  Emphasis is on synthesis, analysis and evaluation of information covered in the textbook, class discussions and collected in the laboratory.  This is an intense course that prepares students to enter Biology II AP/IB.  Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation

 

CHEMISTRY I
Grade level:  10,11,12

This course presents the basic concepts of chemistry and how they relate to the world around us and everyday situations.  Topics covered include atomic theory and structure, elements, compounds, periodicity of the elements, bonding, formula writing, equation balancing, energy changes in chemical equations and the mole concept.  Scientific skills of experimentation, measurement and reporting are emphasized.  A good understanding of solving algebraic equations is required.  Prerequisite:  “C” or better in Biology I/Biology I Honors and “C” or better in Algebra I or teacher recommendation

 

CHEMISTRY I HONORS
Grade level:  10,11,12

This course is a rigorous presentation of the theory and mathematical concepts of chemistry.  It covers the same topics as Chemistry I but with greater depth.  Students planning to study science, engineering, medicine, etc.  in college should take this course.  Emphasis is on synthesis, analysis, and evaluation of information covered in textbook, class discussions and collected in the laboratory.  This is an intense course that prepares students to enter Chemistry II AP/IB or to study college level chemistry.  Prerequisite:  “B” or better in Biology I Honors and “B” or better in Algebra I Honors or teacher recommendation

 

GEOSCIENCE/GEOSCIENCE H
Grade level:  10,11,12

This one year course is designed to integrate the scientific principles related to the earth and its environment.  Topics included are geology, astronomy, cosmology, ecology, meteorology and oceanography.  Scientific methodology and the metric system will be integrated throughout the course.  Demonstrations and/or lab experiences are to be an integral part of instruction.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Principles of Science

 

PHYSICS
Grade level:  10,11,12

A course in the scientific principles of the physical world.  Topics include motion, mechanics, light, electricity, magnetism and modern physics.  Students will solve physical problems and perform and report laboratory activities.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Biology I or “B” or better in Algebra I

 

PHYSICS HONORS
Grade level:  10,11,12

This course is an in-depth presentation of the theory and mathematical concepts of physics.  Topics studied are the same as in Physics I with more complexity.  Students planning to study science, engineering, medicine, etc. in college, should take this course.  Emphasis is placed on synthesis, analysis and evaluation of information covered in the textbook, class discussions, and collected in the laboratory.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of Biology I and “C” or better in Algebra I Honors or Teacher recommendation

HEALTH EDUCATION
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This semester course includes instruction in the structure and function of the body systems and how personal choices affect good health and total wellness.  It includes instruction in the areas of nutrition, first aid, CPR qualifications, stress management, medicines, drug use, alcohol, tobacco and sex education.  Upon completion, students will rotate to Careers.  Prerequisite:  None

 

PERSONAL WELLNESS
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This one year course is designed to promote a positive approach toward one’s personal health.  The student is provided with experience in health related fitness, health related decision making skills, self-esteem and personal regard.  This course can be used to fulfill one of the two physical education credits required for graduation.  Prerequisite:  None

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION I
Grade level:  9,10,11,12

This one year physical education course focuses on the physical, mental, social and emotional development of the individual in cooperative and competitive settings.  The student is provided with experience in psychomotor skills, movement and lifetime health related fitness, knowledge, skills and values.  This course will fulfill one of the two physical education credits required for graduation.  Off-campus facilities may be used.  Prerequisite:  None

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION II
Grade level:  10,11,12

This one year course focuses on the physical, mental, social and emotional development of students through individual and dual sports.  Overall physical fitness will be emphasized throughout the program.  The course will fulfill one of the two physical education credits required for graduation.  Off-campus facilities may be used.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Physical Education I

 

LIFETIME SPORTS
Grade Level:  11,12

This one year course is an activity oriented course designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of lifetime sports.  Terminology, physical and mental well being, skill development, and the techniques of officiating will be emphasized.  Eleventh and twelfth grade students who have fulfilled their two physical education credit requirements may take this elective course.  This class does not meet physical education requirements.  This course may be repeated.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Physical Education I and II
