Our Founder

Achieving Excellence Together

Dr. Joan Sando, a true pioneer in Nevada’s charter school movement, founded Explore Knowledge Academy of Public Speaking (EKAPS) to provide families in Southern Nevada with a one-of-a-kind educational experience. EKAPS received its charter approval in April 2002 with a vision rooted in Personalized Education and Challenging Minds.

At EKAPS, teachers, students, parents, and community members work together to develop confident, capable leaders through 21st-century instructional practices and the integration of modern technology. To support real-world learning and student engagement, EKAPS provides iPads or Chromebooks for all students from kindergarten through twelfth grade for use on campus.

Our Facilities

We Are Providing an Environment for Our Students to Grow & Excel

EKAPS provides a learning environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of all students. Our campus is designed to foster collaboration, communication, and engagement while maintaining high academic standards.

Through strong partnerships between parents, students, teachers, and staff, we create a supportive school culture focused on student success. Our facilities are intentionally structured to meet the needs of diverse learners and to encourage participation, responsibility, and leadership.

Our Instructional Model

Learning Environment and Public Speaking

EKAPS is not a traditional school setting. Our classrooms are created using walls and dividers that form structured learning pods within larger instructional spaces. This model promotes collaboration, peer engagement, and real-world communication skills. While this design may include background noise, students are supported in developing focus, adaptability, and presentation skills within this environment.

Public speaking is a core component of the EKAPS educational model. All students are required to participate in public speaking activities as part of their academic program, including students supported through an IEP or 504 Plan, with appropriate accommodations provided as outlined in their plan. These experiences build confidence, leadership, and communication skills essential for future success.

Our elementary program follows a middle school–style instructional model, with students rotating between classes and working with up to eight different teachers throughout the day. This structure supports academic growth, independence, and organization. Students are placed in classes based on academic readiness, which may include above-grade-level coursework when appropriate. No elementary student is placed in coursework below their age-appropriate grade level.

At EKAPS, students are given both the tools and the community support needed to grow academically, socially, and as confident leaders.

Our Vision

Testimonials

EKAPS Parent

My daughter has been attending this school for six years. She never has and will never attend another school. My son will start Kindergarten here next year. Though I am disappointed that so many of the teachers I was used to left, I still feel this is a fantastic school. My children would be lost in a regular school. When they raised the attendance cap from 500 to 700, class sizes would get larger, but because of the school’s learning system, the children still get an individual learning platform. One of my favorite teachers is MRS. Snyder is an absolute godsend for my daughter and me.

We have had our kids in this school since elementary and now secondary. I can’t say enough good things about the school, teachers, and admin staff—an excellent place for our kids to learn.

I moved my kid from a private school costing me a lot of money and put him in this school three years ago. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for his education. The teachers and staff have been and continue to be great.

Our son has attended EKA since Kindergarten. He is in fifth grade now. We love the Advisors and Staff.

This is our first year at EKA. We were recommended here by Cora, and let me start by saying how delighted we are to be apart of the EKA family. I was completely skeptical of sending my kid to school at all (we were considering homeschooling) primarily because of my bad personal experience in public school, but EKA has proven to us time and time again that we made the right choice in sending Ryk to school here. We love this little close-knit school. We know the teachers and staff care so much. they all know my son by name, which makes me feel like everyone is looking out for him. My son is only in kinder, so we only know a few kinder teachers and the elementary front office, but I can say Mrs. Ordinola, Mr.Semel, Ms. Kelly, George, and Stephanie all 100% have his best interests at heart; I know they want him safe and to succeed. If this has been my experience with this small group of staff, I know that this will be our experience moving forward through the grades. We are also so pleased with his education and the way they teach the children. I couldn’t imagine Ryk at any other school. We are so happy and proud to be apart of EKA! we highly recommend this school, and I always refer my friends, family, clients, and even strangers to send their kids to EKA too!!!
